Weekly Winners… That’s The Point (Of A Sharpie)

While Gage and Carter have never been interested in channeling their inner Picasso, Ryerson loves to color. I still have (had) coloring books from when Gage and Carter were young, and most pages are (were) free from crayons, markers, or paint. In the last few months I’ve found myself scouring the shelves for cheap coloring books (I can’t bring myself to pay $10 for a coloring book… PUHLEASE) to make up for the ones he’s filled with his artistic genius. Because of his perfectionism, he can color better than most kids his age… he doesn’t settle for anything less than perfection, and every brushstroke (or crayon, as the case may be) is meticulously carried out. I’ve watched him sit for hours in the living room while watching tv and filling his coloring books, and occasionally he’ll ask my opinion.

“Mommy, are dinosaurs blue?”

“No, but I’m pretty sure dinosaurs didn’t wear wear leg warmers or play baseball, either, so you go ahead color ‘em any color you want.”

Lately he’s discovered he doesn’t need a coloring book or a blank piece of paper… he can draw on his face. Almost every night for the past two weeks Mark and I have had to give him a bath, not to scrub him clean of dirt and sand, but of the Crayola Markers I bought him last month in a moment of stupidity weakness. I finally hid them the other day, thinking that if he couldn’t find them, that was one less night Mark and I had to deal with dragging him into the bathroom kicking and screaming and telling us, “I LIKE BEING DIRTY!”, because unfortunately, his analness only applies to the house and coloring books… he would rather chew off his own arm than take a bath. So I thought it was a stroke of genius on my part when I hid the markers in the linen closet (I’m not known for my ability to plan ahead)… I shouldn’t have bothered. In fact, I wish I hadn’t.

He managed to find a Sharpie… it’s just now starting to fade.

  1. His mustaches are very swarthy, like he could twirl the ends and plot capers!

My youngest son was/is a master with the coloring, while my oldest never was much into it. I think my youngest loves it so much because I pretty much shoved all those coloring books, markers and crayons I’d bought for the oldest under his face and told him he had to use them so all that money didn’t go to waste!

  2. He is too cute! Thanks for the chuckle! And, you should way know what the point of a sharpie is, c’mon mom! LOL

  3. I remember when my little sister discovered crayons. we were trying to move out of our house and my mom told me to watch her. Well, I got distracted like I normally do and my little sister found her crayons and decided to do her artwork on the doors of the bedrooms. Man! We had to wash the doors too. i think she might have been Ryerson’s age. Too cute. yes, you have a Picasso in the making. He is getting creative.

  4. Missed you lately. I’ve been outofit. You are so tits.

  5. At least he used the appropriate color for the Brower “mustache”!

  6. Oh No!! I’m sure Crayola washable markers are much easier to scrub than Sharpies… was it only skin that was marked or did he leave his “mark” elsewhere?

  7. (oh, and the dollar store is great for cheap coloring books…)

  8. Well, I guess he’s lucky he didn’t draw a Sharpie mustache!

  9. I am not looking forward to when Sprite gets her hands on a Sharpie, as I can only imagine the type of petroglyphs we’ll be seeing on our walls. Oy.
Adorable pictures and definitely bribe worthy!

  10. So cute! At least he didn’t say, “DUH!!” Smart kid – you’d better stay one step ahead of him.

  11. Oh No! I know Sharpie all too well..

  12. Aww, how cute! I can definitely relate!! My youngest son, 3, is a Picaso in training~~just only on my WALLS! But last weekend I went & purchased him a 2-sided easel @ Toys R Us (1 side is a chalk board & 1 side is a dry erase board) so maybe that’ll help some ;)

I LOL @ the video~that was TOO cute! I especialy ♥ the part where Ry said, “That’s the point”!! And you laughing put the icing on the cake ;)

    Great winners & story :)

  13. Speaking of Sharpie- we were at Sam’s yesterday and I was marvelling at the 30-pack of multi-colored Sharpies and I just had to show them to my 6 yo Mary who in turn exclaimed, “I’ve always wanted a PINK Sharpie, Mommy! PLEASE can we get it???!!!”
The whole family loves Sharpies but we did not get them this time. Not yet…

  14. Those mustaches are a riot. :)

  15. He’s so excited about it too! I love the part about “That’s the point!” He’s so adorable!

Thankfully though, these weren’t permanent. Those aren’t allowed in our house anymore. lol.

  16. Sharpie! You know, there was one time where they wore me down so much that I just sat there while they drew on ME, no fuss. That is just terrible.

  17. I’ve had to hide the Sharpies too. Aaron drew on his face with a black one and as it faded, it looked like he had bruises everywhere. I kept thinking someone was going to call child services or something.

    Ryerson is adorable.

  18. you need to get those washable markers mum…c’mon get with it lady!
Sharpies…omg they are hidden in the very depths of the kitchen junk drawer, if any of my lot ever got their hands on one of those suckers it would be a catastrophe!!

Love the mustache…very dapper indeed!! haha
